First time at the track with new mods - E92 M3 Laguna Seca

The car feels amaaaaazing! Exhaust doesn't drone but it is very loud at WOT. It's a shame that it can't pass sound a Laguna Seca (clocks in at 95 db) so I had to lift at turn 5 where the sound booth is. I'll have to figure out how to lower the sound for the next event a Laguna. Instagram: willsgarageofficial

    Here's something essential for anyone doing this... depending on how you have the car supported on Jack stands, or whatever, place 200lbs of weight into the trunk before dropping the rear subframe to prevent the car from tipping over the supporting platform (if it applies to how you have the car supported)

    Man, SPL quality has really gone way down the past couple of years... Snapped arm to knuckle bolts, revised studs that still snap, tension strut/thrust arms breaking due to too thin walls, endlinks without proper clearance for popular coilovers (Ohlins R&T), and now cutting production corners due to "high demand..." I've personally experienced two of those failure modes. Shameful.

    Redlining it like that shouldn’t have been what broke the engine. That was almost certainly just the straw that broke the camels back. These are performance engines made to be driven hard. This is clearly from either a significant defect in the oil pump, or the prior owner absolutely destroyed it.

    Seems like there are quite some design flaws with SPL E9X products. Ti bolts thread into aluminum was not a good idea either, my tie rod end housing stripped upon first installation. I would suggest swap all Ti bolts to steel if you want to run them. There was not many companies make lower control arm, I went for MRT so far so good except the jam nuts came loose 2 times because of the heavy load on track.

    I think I actually commented on one of your earlier videos about the risks of running SPL equipment. Good customer service is not an excuse for how many serious failures have been documented on the forums with SPL products on the e9x chassis. Someone lost their e9x m3 at Laguna on T1 from an LCA failure similar to this. It is very pretty equipment but I would never be able to trust that my car was safe with any of their parts installed. Glad you are okay and nothing was damaged!!

    • @sleepyro

    Using MRT engineering. Simple, solid and it works. Anyway, I was the one that got in touch with you on your IG. That noise is exactly what I experienced. It’s your rear brake shields rubbing on the rotor hats. I took mine off and the noise went away.

    • @TheThiuser

  • @gt1r
    @gt1r 23 дні тому

    SPL isn’t great. Period. I’ve seen multiple failures similar to this, and countless instances of the titanium hardware they use on their products backing out-rendering any adjustments you’ve made useless throwing your alignment off in the process. The factory arms are absolutely fantastic, and take the abuse well. There are other ways to adjust suspension geometry up front without the use of adjustable arms that only serve to weaken the suspension and over complicate alignments.

  • @mfujii1318

    SPL is a reputable company, sucks that this happened to them but at least they took no shortcuts to get you back on track. If it was truly a terrible company they would leave you in the dust and be standoffish. This occurrence should make them an even better brand

    I really appreciate you putting this tutorial up; I used it to change my gearbox oil over the weekend. I 100% agree that having a good set of large snap ring pliers is a must. I decided to go ahead on the job with my small pliers with the interchangeable head (fully expecting them to break). Although I eventually got them to work (and they didn't break!), it took about 30 minutes of fiddling. That snap ring is a beast and a large set of snap ring pliers makes the job much easier. The only other thing I would add is to make sure you have a device that can get fluid into the gearbox relatively quickly. I had a cheap handpump thing, and when doing the ISTA oil balancing, I couldn't get the additional 2L of oil into the gearbox in time before it reached 40C. I had to redo the process again the next day. The pump you show in this video probably works great, so I'd recommend anyone doing this job get something similar and not attempt it with a handpump like I did.

    This dry method is the way to do it. I had the motive rubber line split and it started spraying brake fluid inside the engine bay and on to the car. The bleeder bottle is backwards, the center tube is where the brake fluid should be going into the bleeder bottle. Also you can use the bleeder bottle to remove the fluid from the reservoir - put the rubber tube into the reservoir, squeeze the bottle, plug the air hole on the bottle with your finger and un-squeeze the bottle.
